WHAT TO WEAR:

The climate in western North Carolina is usually comfortable in the summer. Daytime temperatures typically range between mid-70’s and mid to-upper-80’s. We often have occasional afternoon and evening showers, so rain gear and jackets are often appropriate. Often the nights are cool, but can be humid. Those with physical problems may find walking the hilly campus challenging, so plan your time and shoes accordingly. Please notify us if you have mobility issues.

GNSI conference are very casual, so bring comfortable attire along with clothes that are fun and suitable for evening events. Pack walking shoes, light jackets, light rain gear, and anything you need for your field trips.

It is not required, but GNSI members dress up for the Monday evening exhibit opening and the Wednesday evening awards banquet.

WHAT TO BRING:

Linens are provided and will be in your rooms when you arrive, which will include:

  • 2 towels (bath and hand)
  • 2 washcloths
  • 2 sheets: bottom and top
  • 1 pillowcase
  • 1 light blanket
  • 1 pillow.

These are dormitory mattresses and pillows so you may choose to bring an extra pillow, mattress pad or blanket from home. These mattresses and are covered in a plastic washable fabric, so some conference attendees often bring an inexpensive twin size foam mattress cover, which really does help make the beds more comfortable. This works well if you are driving of course. Parents with small children staying in the residence hall will need to provide the child’s bedding, including air mattress or cot, pillow, blanket and linens.

Other possible items to bring:

  • Alarm clock
  • Baby/child stroller or wagon
  • Clothes hangers
  • Electric fan
  • Flashlight
  • Flip-flops or shower shoes
  • Insect repellent
  • Reading lamp
  • Small coffee maker
  • Toiletries including soap, body wash, shampoo

WWC has a limited number of fans, phones, clothes hangers, reading lamps, Ethernet cables, and mattress pads (for air travelers only, please) available to borrow but if any of these items are essential to your comfort, plan to bring your own.

There are phonelines in every residence hall room, but you will need a calling card to make long distance calls, and either Ethernet ports or wireless connections for access to the college’s computer network.

The WWC Campus Store will be open this summer. The Store is located in the lower level of Gladfelter. The store carries basic convenience supplies, if an attendee forgot their toothbrush, and some art supplies. The store also carries limited snacks and soft drinks. The store will definitely have chocolate. Hours TBA.
IMPORTANT: The store will not have ability to accept credit cards this summer.
IMPORTANT: There is an ATM in Gladfelter Dining Hall.

If you are taking a workshop or a field trip, please check the information for a specific material list or a packing list.

Also, don't forget to pack your portfolio (Traditional folders or loaded on a laptop/tablet) to the Portfolio event on Sunday evening. Members also choose to bring their business cards and tearsheets for networking.
